Cross Country skiing in Algoma is arguably the best in all of North America. Rugged, ancient mountains are elevated over 300 meters, or 1,000 feet, setting the stage for exciting and incredibly scenic trails through terrain that is, in the other seasons, virtually inaccessible. Cross Country ski enthusiasts can enjoy a microcosm of the best classic and skating trails that Algoma has to offer only minutes north of Sault Ste. Marie at
The Hiawatha Nature Conservancy, operated by
Sault Trails and Recreation (STAR). Approximately forty minutes north of the Sault on Highway 17N lies the crown jewel of cross country skiing in Algoma;
Stokely Creek, with over 130 kilometers of groomed trails extending throughout nearly 11,000 acres of private and public land.
