ORPHAN LAKE TRAIL
One of the most diverse trails in the park, Orphan Lake Trail offers an excellent introduction to hiking. The first part of the trail passes through stands of sugar maple and yellow birch to a cliff overlooking Orphan Lake. From here follow the western shore of Orphan Lake and climb to spectacular lookouts over Lake Superior. Descend 100 metres to an isolated pebble beach on Lake Superior. To continue on the Orphan Lake Trail. follow the Lake Superior shoreline, north to the Baldhead River. The trail winds upstream along the river, past a series of rapids and waterfalls and then climbs to the east shore of Orphan Lake before joining again with the original trail. The Orphan Lake Trail also provides access to the Coastal Trail. To continue north on the Coastal Trail, towards Beatty Cove, take the bridge across the Baldhead River. To pick up the Coastal Trail south towards Katherine Cove, follow the beach south.
