The Porcupine

The Porcupine. Porcupine tracks.
This notorious rodent is one of the easiest mammals to recognize since it's fur has evolved into a formidable defense of quills. One can't help but wonder if such effective armament is protecting a woodland delicacy. The porcupine occupies a variety of habitats and can be found throughout Algoma and Northern Ontario. Porcupines are strictly vegetarian and their favourite food is the tender bark, or cambium layer, of deciduous and coniferous trees. They also eat buds, leaves and twigs. If you encounter a porcupine in the wild, remember, DO NOT TOUCH!
