The River Otter

The River Otter. Otter tracks.
If any mammal of Algoma and Northern Ontario deserves the title "Party Animal", it's the River Otter. Their amusing antics universally delight people. They roll, slide, dive and body-surf in and near their aquatic habitats, all for the obvious fun of it. They are also, unlike other members of the Weasel family, highly sociable creatures which take great pleasure in frolicking with each other. If one was lucky enough to observe a River Otter in the wild, it would appear that they have nothing but play time, but this is the result of their supreme effectiveness at catching prey. River Otters year round, live along or in wooded rivers, ponds and lakes. Being primarily an aquatic mammal, the River Otter eats crayfish, turtles, frogs and fish, but it has also be known to eat small mammals and insects.
