The Beaver
The Beaver may be the most remarkable mammal in Canada's history, as much for it's formidable natural abilities as it's central role in the development of the country. No other mammal leaves such an indeliable mark on it's surroundings as the Beaver with it's legendary facility for cutting down trees and building dams, forever changing the landscape in the process. The search for the Beaver's luxuriant coat of fur motivated the Fur Trade's exploration of a vast portion of Canada's undiscovered territory. The Beaver occupies fresh water environments wherever there is suitable woody vegetation since it feeds on bark and cambium. Sometimes, in the summer months, it feeds on aquatic vegetation.
