The Black Bear
Black Bears are primarily forest dwellers, so they are ubiquitous throughout Algoma and Northern Ontario. They can easily climb trees and are often found foraging in natural or roadside clearings. Up to 95% of the Black Bears diet is plant material such as leaves, berries and fruit, but they are omnivores as well, so they also eat small mammals, insects and carrion. They are not above rummaging through human garbage, which explains the almost automatic association of Black Bears with garbage dumps. They are certainly the most prominent example of "hibernators", although technically they go into a state called "torpor", which is a form of light hibernation like drowsiness, over the winter months. Although they are reclusive creatures, any contact with Black Bears by people should be handled with extreme caution.
