THE NORTH VIEW HISTORY
Beginning as long as 10,000 years ago, the rapids at the mouth of Lake Superior were teeming with whitefish, making an ancient meeting place for many native tribes of the continent. The region formed the heart of the fabled transcontinental fur trade route. It was the only northern bastion in the War of 1812. The region became a garrison to protect the emerging nation from the Red River Rebellion of 1816. The CPR practically foundered under the immense weight of North Western Ontario's Canadian Shield and ironically, the region saved the CPR from ruin when Ottawa required the quick transport of troops over Northern Ontario to stave off Louis Riel's Red River Rebellion. Into the 20th Century, it was a forge for steel and a power plant of hydroelectricity. North America's first and largest uranium deposits were found in the area, fueling the Nuclear Age.
