THE NORTH VIEW GEOGRAPHY
Geographically the region lies at the centre of the continent in the heart of the Great Lakes. It is the core of the Canadian Shield, a vast expanse of undulating, pre-Cambrian granite created almost 4 billion years ago. Covering one third the total area of North America, this apparently immovable object meets an unrelenting sweet water sea carved out by ancient glaciers: Lake Superior, the largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth! No landscape in the entire country could better exemplify the spirit of the Canadian geography and identity than Algoma and Northern Ontario. It has been said, "certainly something in the country's geography has a grip on the subliminal consciousness of all its citizens...".
