Since well before the creation of the country until the present day, artistic and cultural expression in Canada has predominately focused on the powerful connection of the people with the land. The monumental geography and dramatic seasonality of the country has been the pre-eminent metaphor of artistic and cultural expression. The geography and seasonality of Algoma and Northern Ontario has played a seminal role in the spiritual expressions of native peoples and the European tradition of landscape painting. The landscape and seasons of Northern Ontario are predominately represented by the Group of Seven, the first truly Canadian art movement.
